Managing Mental Illness

As adults, we often find it difficult to seek counseling because we think we should handle problems ourselves.  This independence and self-reliance is what we need to help us resolve our problems. Unfortunately, when we experience problems, we sometimes lose our sense of independence and self-reliance. We feel helpless and have difficulty focusing. This can prevent us from seeing our way clearly. We find we are unable to see the forest for the trees and reaching for outside help becomes necessary.

      Counseling can be that help.

YOUTH

Youth, on the other hand, assume what they are experiencing "must be normal" until they end up in trouble.  Their difficulties often show up as behavior problems at home, in school or in the community at large.

When they are asked:

      "What is wrong with you?"

                       or

         "Are you feeling OK?"

    They will often respond with

    "Nothing" or "I don't know."

As a parent, it can be difficult to know when counseling is needed.

GROUP THERAPY

Joining a group of strangers may seem scary at first, but group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. Group members are almost always surprised by how much they enjoy the group experience. Your group becomes a support and a sounding board. Talking and listening to others helps.

We don't often speak to others about our mental health. Sharing with others who also share what they are going through can help you know you are not alone.

In addition, other members can help with specific ideas for managing your particular issue and hold you accountable as you work on resolving it. Many in the group will have had similar issues or may have found answers you have not yet discovered.

By seeing how other people tackle problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for facing your own concerns.

As groups form at KGM Counseling & Consulting, we will make them available to those who would benefit from them.
